Residence permits in the Republic of Lithuania are issued to a foreigner who is not a citizen of a Member State of the European Union or of a Member State of the European Free Trade Association. A foreigner has the right to choose, change or leave a place of residence in the Republic of Lithuania and return to it for the period of validity of a residence permit. A foreigner must notify the Migration Department about changes in his or her place of residence and keep in mind that the Law on the Declaration of Residence states that if a person leaves the Republic of Lithuania for more than 6 months period, he or she must declare the departure (in such case the residence permit may be revoked).

There are two types of residence permit in Lithuania: temporary residence permit and permanent residence permit in the Republic of Lithuania.

Temporary residence permit

Temporary residence permit is a document granting a foreigner the right to temporary reside in the Lithuania for a period specified in the permit.

Permanent residence permit

Permanent residence permit is a document entitling a foreigner to reside in Lithuania and certifying the alien’s permanent resident status.
