The citizenship of a child born abroad

A child both of whose parents at the moment of his or her birth were citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, shall be a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania regardless of whether he or she was born on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, or beyond its borders. If a child was born in a mixed family and one of the parents is a Lithuanian citizen and the other a citizen of a foreign country, the child is many cases may possess two citizenships.

When a child is born it is necessary to notify Lithuanian institutions of their birth, as in the child’s birth has to be included in the registry of the Republic of Lithuania Civil Registry office. The birth is included in the registry despite the citizenship of the child.
